Mrs Hunter & Mrs Leggate

WELCOME TO CLASS 1HL.

Welcome to our new school year! Mrs Hunter and Mrs Leggate are thoroughly enjoying teaching Class 1 HL already - we are having lots of fun! Mrs Hunter is working on a Monday, Tuesday and every alternate Wednesday, whilst Mrs Leggate is working every alternate Wednesday and then every Thursday and Friday. The teaching assistants in our classroom will be Mrs Webb and Mrs Chapman who will be with us in the mornings and Mrs Darby who will be with us in the afternoons - hopefully bringing in some of her renowned carrot cake! smiley

Mrs Lauder will be teaching us Spanish on a Wednesday afternoon, Mr Hicklin will be teaching us RE on a Tuesday morning and Miss Csiba will be teaching us Music on a Thursday afternoon.  What an exciting curriculum we have!

TERM 1

This term, we are doing Mrs Hunter's favourite topic - 'The Sound of Music'. You will often catch her humming or singing the songs from the film! We will be looking at life cycles in Science, continents and oceans in Geography, and making delicious apple strudels in DT - yummy!

Our children brought in some of their 'Favourite Things' about which we wrote some super poetry (which we even tried to make fit into the song).

If any of you have been to the Austrian Alps, please do bring in some photos so that we can talk about them.

TERM 2

Welcome back to the Christmas term! We have a lot to do this term - Young Enterprise, the Christmas play, the Christmas Fayre and library visits.

This term, we will be looking at:

  • Guy Fawkes in History and writing a newspaper report.
  • Plants in Science - what will be growing in our classroom by Spring?
  • Collage in Art - using art in nature and the wonderful patterns that it produces.
  • In Literacy we will be looking at different 'Festivals of Light' as well as using the fabulous advert from John Lewis, 'The Bear and the Hare' where we will be looking at characterisation, speech and descriptive writing.

Please remember to keep practising your times tables. The more you practise, the better and faster you'll become!

Term 4

We'll Meet Again

What a fabulous topic we have this term - World War 2! We will be learning all about Anderson shelters,  rationing and will be using the book 'The Lion and the Unicorn' by Shirley Hughes to learn more about the Blitz and what life was like for children evacuated during the war.

In English, we will be writing descriptive settings from the Blitz  and also learning how to write letters, by writing letters from evacuees.

Luckily, we have been built an Anderson shelter for our classroom and the children have thoroughly enjoyed pretending what life would have been like during an air raid.

BITS AND BOBS.

PE in 1 HL will be on a Monday. Please make sure that PE kits are in school all term with appropriate clothes for the weather. Please note that due to inclement weather, PE days may change sometimes and so it is important to have PE kits in school at all times.

Spelling tests will be on a Friday.

We ask that children read at least three times a week and have it signed in their reading records. Reading is so important for a child so we ask that you listen to, and read with, your child as often as possible.

Book change days will be on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We will be going to the library once a month so we ask that if there are any parents who could help with this visit, by walking to the library and back, please could you give your names to Mrs Hunter or Mrs Leggate. Many thanks.

Please make sure that water bottles are in school every day. Drinking water really helps keep our brains active and alert - you won't spot Mrs Leggate or Mrs Hunter without one! It needs to be clearly named and brought back to school every day.
