Writing dialogue

Re-watch the video from 1 minute 50 seconds to 3 minutes.

We will be focussing on the part of the video from 1 minute 50 seconds to 2 minutes 30 seconds. (Where the aliens are talking). The rest of the video up to 3 minutes gives you background information about the aliens.

Pay careful attention to the expressions and hand gestures made be the aliens and also think about the picture of Sherman. The aliens are clearly talking about him but what are they saying. Why are they going to do? (this is linked to Sherman).

TASK – To write the dialogue between the aliens.

1. Read the worksheet called ‘Direct Speech’ to remind yourself how direct speech needs to be structured
2. Think about what the aliens might be talking about (Are they going to help Sherman?)
3. Make some notes to help guide your writing e.g. – Why is the man in the picture? What is he trying to do? Does he need help? And more …
4. Draft the dialogue between the aliens – keep looking back at how to structure it

You should be aiming to write about one side of lined A4 paper.

We will proof read and edit the dialogue on Wednesday.

Edit and improve your writing

Read you dialogue straight after you have watched the video – Does the subject of your dialogue seem to fit with the video clip? (this is not about timings but about the content of the conversation).

TASK – To proof read and edit the dialogue between the aliens.

2. Make a check list of points to look for when proof reading – (sense, new line, speech marks, other punctuation in the correct place, better vocabulary SAID, verb tense,) these are some ideas.
3. Proof read and edit your dialogue
4. Write up your edited dialogue – think about layout (new lines) and your handwriting.

Making notes

You are going to write a detailed description of Sherman’s invention the S.S. Sherman (flying machine). Remember – the machine can move and make sounds so you can also describe these – NOT just what it looks like.

1. Re-watch the video from 4 minutes 40 seconds to the end. MAKE NOTES of the things you can see, hear, imagine what you can feel and smell (ORGANISE you notes in to related groups e.g. the outside of the machine, the cockpit, the mechanical workings etc). These will become your paragraphs.
2. Draft descriptive sentences/paragraphs about the flying machine.

SEE descriptive features sheet – you will need to include examples shown on this sheet.

    3. Proof read your work for sense

Different types of industry. Look at the presentation and then complete the worksheet. Then look at the clip of life in rural Kenya. Write up what you see as a diary and mention the different types of industry that you are involved in during the day.

2. Read your description of the flying machine (Is there anything else you could include?  – zoom in on small details/wide angle to give an overall picture
3. Proof read your work and identify areas to develop

• Improve vocabulary – thesaurus
• Spellings – dictionary
•  Paragraphing
• Sentence openers (e.g. fronted adverbials etc)
• Sentence structure (e.g. conjunctions, embedded clauses etc)
